Professor Florence Kuek
Dr Florence Kuek Chee Wee is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Chinese Studies, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, Universiti Malaya (UM), Malaysia’s oldest university and one of the region’s leading centres for Chinese studies. She obtained her Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) from Universiti Malaya in 2018, and also holds a master’s and bachelor’s degree from the same institution, demonstrating a strong and continuous academic grounding in Chinese literature, the humanities, and social studies.
Dr Kuek’s research is interdisciplinary in nature, with primary foci on contemporary Chinese literature, literary criticism, translation studies, and language education. Her scholarly output encompasses academic monographs, peer-reviewed journal articles, book chapters, creative writing, and translated works. Her monograph, An Ethical Literary Criticism of Dr Han Suyin’s Autobiography: Braving Irrationality (Routledge, 2025), offers a significant re-reading of Han Suyin’s autobiographical writings through the lens of ethical literary criticism, highlighting her methodological rigor and interdisciplinary approach. She is also the co-editor of Tasik itu Bagai Cermin: Antologi Cerpen Sastera Mahua (2022) and has published extensively on Mahua (Malaysian Chinese) literature, literary subjectivity, and cross-cultural memory in fiction.
Beyond her research contributions, Dr Kuek is actively involved in academic and professional service. She serves as Assistant Secretary of the Association of Professionals in Curriculum and Education Instruction (APROCEI) and Treasurer of the Writers Association of Chinese Medium Malaysia and holds life memberships in several national and international scholarly associations.
Dr Kuek’s academic and literary achievements have been recognised through multiple accolades, including the Excellence Service Award (Universiti Malaya, 2025) and the Muara Writing Prize (Winner, Malay Short Stories, 2024), alongside other national writing honours. As Chief Editor of the Asian Journal of Social Studies (AJSS), she is committed to rigorous peer review, editorial integrity, and the promotion of inclusive, intercultural, and interdisciplinary scholarly dialogue.
